The Student Health Centre (formerly known as Campus Clinic) has moved to new premises situated in the Aston University Health Clinics Building, behind the Library on Campus.

inhaler2 The Student Health Centre is a Nurse Led Clinc and is available by appointment for treatment of minor illness, sexual health screening, dressings, removal of sutures, ear syringing, asthma check, diabetic check, blood test and smears. (Please see the Appointment Types Page for a full list of Nurse and HCA Appointments, all of which, except Vaccinations/Immunisations, can be performed at the Student Health Centre)

The nurses & HCAs can deal with minor ailments such as tonsillitis, chest infections, cystitis, flu, minor sports injuries, asthma, diabetic monitoring and contraceptive advice.

New for 2012 - Doctor appointments will be available at the Student Health Centre on Tuesday mornings 09.00 - 11.30 (Female GP) and Wednesday afternoons 12.00 - 14.00 (Male GP).

The Student Health Centre will be open between Monday-Friday 09.00 - 16.00 during both International Freshers Week (17th - 21st September) and main Freshers Week (24th September - 28th September) for Students to register with the Practice. Booked appointments will be available from Monday 1st October.

Antenatal Care

pregnant11 Appointments for antenatal care are made during normal surgery hours. The doctor will advise you when to attend.

Baby/Child Vaccinations, Baby Clinics And Child Health

It is strongly advised that our youngest patients are kept up to date with their immunisations. Please make appointments at reception. We run a Baby Clinic on Friday Mornings between 10am and 12pm.

Adult Immunisations And Travel Vaccinations

Adult immunisations include influenza immunisation for those patients aged 65 and over and other at risk patients, e.g. those patients diagnosed with asthma or diabetes.

Vision Services

The Department of Vision Sciences houses an Optometry Clinic which is open to staff and students of the University and the general public.

Counselling Service

The University Counselling Service, situated in room G16 in the main building Aston University, offers help to students on a wide range of issues. Counselling sessions are confidential and are not recorded on your medical records.

Our clinic is accessible to both students and non-registered patients offering travel advice and vaccinations. You will have to pay for certain travel vaccines e.g. Rabies, Japanese Encephalitis and Meningitis. Hepatitis A are chargeable for certain countries. Please enquire at reception for further details.

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required. It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. These vaccines have to be ordered as they are not a stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

Medical Notes for Academic Departments

Medical notes should be requested from a doctor at the time of illness/incident and handed to the Senior Tutor/Head of Department. Notes will be categorised by the doctor to indicate the extent which they believe academic performance would have been affected.

Sexual Health / Contraception

Most accidents are caused by humans and most humans are caused by accident! If you need advice about sexual health issues or contraception please come for a chat with a nurse or doctor.

All contraception is free on prescription. Condoms are free from the surgery. If you have unprotected sex, you may be exposing yourself to sexually transmitted infections, not to mention pregnancy. Always use a condom! The practice also offers IUCD fittings, depo provera injections, Implanon (contraceptive implants) and the oral contraceptive pill.

Emergency contraception is available from the surgery, Brook Advisory Centre and at the Birmingham NHS walk-in centre situated on the lower ground floor of Boots The Chemist. It has to be taken within the first 72 hours of unprotected sex. If taken within the first 24 hours it will prevent 95% of expected pregnancies.

The doctors carry out a variety of non-NHS medical examinations e.g. pre-employment, insurance, sports fitness, ‘year out’, Camp America.

There is a charge payable for some of these examinations and you should ask at reception when you book an appointment.

Physiokinetic Physiotherapy and Sports Injuries Clinic

Over the last 10 years, Physiokinetic has developed a broad based portfolio of contracts. Our elite sport work includes Warwickshire County Cricket Club and The University of Birmingham. We are also the Midlands hub centre for TASS (Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme) and are one of the two national centres for England hockey. We also provide an Occupational Health physiotherapy service for 8,000 or so and staff at The University of Birmingham and 600 workers at Allied Bakeries in West Bromwich. We have NHS contracts with South Birmingham PCT treating SBPCT staff and acute patients at two GP practices in the Kings Heath area. Our physiotherapists are registered to treat patients who have access to private health care insurance but we also accepting self funding patients at a very reasonable rate (see the attached information). Many of these referrals are from GP’s, Orthopaedic and Sports injury Consultants (including The Knee and Shoulder Clinic, The Birmingham Spinal Clinic, The Foot and Ankle Clinic and two local hand and upper limb surgeons from the Priory Hospital).

The service is due to start in the first week of August initially on Mondays (12 pm - 6 pm) and Fridays (8.30 am – 12 pm) but the intention is to be based at the centre full time. This will largely depend on marketing and referrals. Our success so far as a business has been based on a hard working approach to patient care with the emphasis on “hands on” physiotherapy. However, we always aim to provide a home exercise programme (especially with those patients on very limited budgets) and do our best to educate patients about their condition. Our physiotherapists also understand the importance of communication with GP’s and consultants.

By giving us as much notice as you can you are helping us to make sure that someone else is given your slot.

When the practice is closed

If you need urgent help or advice there is always a doctor on-call. Telephone the Surgery number and follow the instructions. If there is a problem with the Surgery number when the practice is closed please call Badger, our Out of Hours Provider, direct on 0300 555 9999
